Q. Why do my children have to bow?
A. To show respect to the instructors.
Q. Why do I have to salute?
A. To show respect to the Canadian flag.
Q. How long does it take to get a black belt?
A. Each individual takes his or her own amount of time. At Dove Taekwondo, we only hold two classes per week, so it takes a little longer. We have had people get their black belts in as little as four years, yet others more than 10 years. At other clubs, some really keen students have achieved the level of black belt within two years, as they could train every day.
Q. Why are there so many versions of Taekwondo?
A. Because the versions have different backgrounds and histories but the same goal.
Q. Why is the World Taekwondo Federation preferable for Dove Taekwondo?
A. The World Taekwondo Federation is the recognized Taekwondo body for the Olympics.
Q. How and when should Taekwondo be used?
A. In the Do Jang under supervision, or in a defense situation - after you have tried to talk your way out and walk away from the situation.
Q. Do my children need a uniform?
A. At Dove Taekwondo, you are allowed to try out the classes with loose fitting clothing for the first two weeks you attend. After that time, you will require a uniform. Our club can sell you a new or used one (if available). Check our equipment pricing page on this site, under Fees.
Q. What do the bars on the black belt stand for?
A. To signify one's degree.
Q. Will my child get hurt in Taekwondo?
A. All though Taekwondo is a contact sport it is not very dangerous to practice. The contact portion of the training is about practicing technique rather than being about winning and as a result contact is usually light. It is a rule of the club that protective gear is worn for contact activities. In the event of an accident all of our instructors are trained in first aid.
Q. How should the instructor be addressed?
A. All students address each other as either Sir or Ma'am, which can be prefaced with their name. This ensures continuous respect in the class at all times.
Q. Why to the most junior belts get to stand in the back?
A. Taekwondo's theory is that the more senior belts probably know more, and can lead by example.
Q. What if my child forgets their belt?
A. Apologize to the instructor. They might be given a white belt for the class (regardless of what their current belt level is). Students with no belt must line up behind the white belts.
